Jean de FALBAIRE: From Mauritius to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

On the paradise island of Mauritius, waves have shaped more than just pristine beaches; they've also sculpted a remarkable athlete. Jean de Falbaire, a 26-year-old kitesurfer, is ready to make waves on the biggest stage of all, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This journey is a testament to his passion, determination and the unwavering support of his sponsor, BARNES Mauritius.

A natural choice: The beginnings of a kitesurfing career

Growing up near the beach, Jean's affinity for the ocean was almost predestined. Introduced to kitesurfing by his father at the age of 8, he quickly developed a deep love for the sport. “Kitesurfing was a natural choice for me,” Jean recalls. “My friends were also competitors, and without their inspiration and our mutual desire to excel, I wouldn't be where I am today.”

The road to Paris 2024

Jean's preparation for the 2024 Olympics began 3 years ago, with the majority of his training taking place in France. The European training grounds provided the competitive environment he needed to hone his skills. “Being in Europe was crucial to competing internationally and training daily at a high level,” explains Jean
One of the major challenges Jean faced was his weight. To be competitive, he had to gain 15 kg, a feat he achieved thanks to a rigorous diet and weight training program. “I had to eat in large quantities and follow a weight training regime to gain mass,” he recalls.

A day in the life of an Olympian in preparation

Jean's typical training day is a mix of rigorous physical activity and meticulous nutrition. “I start by eating oatmeal, then go to the gym. After a second breakfast of eggs, bread and bacon, I train on the water for about two hours. After training, I have a late lunch, followed by a nap or recovery time. Dinner preparation is essential for a hearty meal, and I aim for 8 to 9 hours of sleep to start again the next day.”

Achievements and aspirations

Jean's devotion has already earned him the title of three-time African champion and Indian Ocean champion. However, his eyes are set on a bigger prize at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. “My main goal is to reach the finals,” he shares. Representing Mauritius on the international stage fills Jean with immense pride. “Mauritius is where my heart is. This island has shaped my identity, and I'm proud to put Mauritius in the spotlight.”

The role of sponsorship: BARNES Mauritius

BARNES Mauritius played a crucial role in Jean's career. “BARNES' financial support has been decisive. It enabled me to acquire the equipment I needed for my training and competitions,” says Jean gratefully. The sport of kitesurfing relies heavily on reliable equipment, and Barnes' support has ensured that Jean can remain competitive.

Beyond kitesurfing

Apart from kitesurfing, Jean has a great passion for fishing, an activity that occupies his dreams while he's in Europe. His advice to young Mauritians aspiring to a sporting career is simple but profound: “Listen to yourself and go kiteboarding!”

Jean values the connection he maintains with his fans via social networks. “I love sharing moments from my journey, and staying connected with fans is crucial. Social networks play a significant role in my career,” he notes.

As Jean de FALBAIRE prepares to take on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, he carries with him the hopes and dreams of a nation. His journey from the beaches of Mauritius to the world stage is a source of inspiration for budding athletes the world over. With the unwavering support of BARNES Mauritius and his relentless pursuit of excellence, Jean is ready to make history.
